YOUR DAILY JOURNAL
by compound complex indear friends,.
much of what we do on a daily basis is routine and of no particular, earth-shaking importance.
however, after reviewing letters of family going back to wwii, it is fascinating to read what dad was doing on board the aircraft carrier in the pacific on any old day, what mom was cooking on her ever-steaming range, how i was dealing with the roller coaster of emotion at bethel [mom saved all my letters], how nana wrote that she would not study with the witnesses [per my request] but 'here are some mittens i knitted for you when you canvass new york with your magazines.

Changing meanings of words: "Brother" and "Sister".
by Open mind inever notice how most jws use the titles "brother" and "sister"?
in my experience, 99% of the time it was not a term of endearment.
it was actually a term of formality very much like "mister", "mrs.", "miss" or "ms.".

Ever notice how most JWs use the titles "Brother" and "Sister"? In my experience,
99% of the time it was not a term of endearment. It was actually a term of formality
very much like "Mister", "Mrs.", "Miss" or "Ms.". (Of course good JWs wouldn't use Ms. but
that's a topic for another thread.)
For example, if an elder was about to swoop down on an unsuspecting sheep and give
them a guilt trip of some sort, they would invariably start out with "Brother OM, do
you have a minute?" The use of the term "Brother" would help the elder set a formal
tone for the conversation to follow, very much like a traffic cop looking at my
driver's license and calling me "Mister OM".
Every now and then, the Org would make reference to the terms "Brother" and "Sister"
as marketing tools to show us how special we were as JWs and that we were privileged
to have 8 million brothers and sisters around the world. But in everday life, if I
was going to ask a JW friend who I was fairly close to if they wanted to go grab a
beer, never in a million years would I start that invitation with "Hey Brother
Somewhat Laid-Back, wanna get a burger and a beer after the meeting?"
What was your experience?

My wife and I recently summited Half Dome with some ex-JWs. It was a spectacular experience.
Clarice would be smiling.
